Five Egg Dishes You Probably Haven’t Tried at Home
Get out of the egg rut by adding these new egg recipes to your repertoire.
Eggs are a perfect food. They can be the most valuable player in a meal or the act in a supporting role with equal ease. There are endless different methods of preparation, and they are delicious for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Eggs are also a tremendous way to improve your cooking skills on the whole. Cooking an egg well requires a deft understanding of heat, timing, and seasoning— three aspects of making a great meal that can’t be underestimated.
Why, then, do we usually end up making the same eggs for breakfast every single day? Most egg recipes are not time consuming, so it’s an easy way to mix up your day without having to step too far out of your routine.
Need a little push? Here are five egg dishes that will help you step outside your comfort zone:
Soft Boiled Egg with Soldiers
It’s a shame that Soft-Boiled Eggs have fallen somewhat out of fashion in the United States. This dish with “soldiers” or little toast batons, is a wonderful way to have fun eating these runny delicious eggs. Simmer your eggs for 3.5 minutes for the perfect doneness. If toast soldiers seem too basic for your taste, find some more extravagant options soldier options here.
Thai Omelet
I could wax poetic about crispy eggs forever, but really my words could never do justice to what you should taste instead. A Thai omelet is a quick endeavor, but it is not for the faint of heart. The recipe shown here is a good tutorial, but I always do mine without the ground pork and have an equal amount of success.
Tortilla Española
For me, a good Tortilla Española is the height of hedonism. A Spanish take on a fritatta, this egg dish uses onions, potatoes, and olive oil to make a meal that transitions seamlessly from day to night. Add a good garlic and paprika aioli to the top to make it shine its brightest. This recipe gives some good ground rules to making the tapa in your own home.
Baked Eggs with Cream
I have a distinct memory of cooking these eggs for my grandmother once when I was in college. She always would remind me of how delicious that meal was! I know she meant it, because she wasn’t one to mince words.
This dish is a reminder that the simplest of recipes can pay off in dividends far beyond the effort. You could literally make these eggs with one of your arms tied behind your back, but everyone would still assume you are an expert at your craft.
Egg Drop Soup
Bet you weren’t expecting a soup on this list! I love watching the eggs form into ribbons when you stir them into the broth— it’s a delight that makes you all the more excited to sit down and eat it. This how-to guide from The Kitchn captures the spirit of intuitive cooking, giving suggestions for spices to add to make the dish your own.
That’s all she wrote! Did you try any of these ideas? Did this list give you inspiration for a different egg meal? Let me know in the comments!
